Ron Bongo: Open Source and GPS Navigational Devices

Learn more about open source software with Ron Bongo and know how the open source concept can be applied to commercial products such as GPS Navigational devices.
There is a growing popularity of GPS navigational tools and tracking devices offering a wide array of features and functionalities for use with any personal, commercial or industrial purposes. The technology of satellite tracking systems, used exclusively by the military until they opened the system for civilian use, is now made available and very affordable with the proliferation of various brands and models offered at wholesale prices.
The problem however, with such devices flooding the market, is the fact that most do not come with a pre-installed software application to make the product work. This is a little compromise made by suppliers to keep prices low and more competitive than OEM brands with proprietary software. A good thing though is that these devices are shipped unlocked and can be installed with any compatible software the user can get his hands on.
And this is where the problems start. Some unscrupulous suppliers will sell these devices with installed pirated software that are often unreliable and would eventually break down when the user needs the device the most. Some users, trying to circumvent the high cost of proprietary software, would download cracked versions of these software applications – making their systems vulnerable to viruses, Trojans, worms and other malware attacks.
The most viable alternative option is to use open source software that is compatible with your device. There are scores of resources available where users can download open source applications which they can use to activate and operate their devices – at no or minimal cost to them. Being open source does not mean these applications are in any way inferior to proprietary software, when in fact they can be at par or even better than their more expensive counterparts.
The problem however, lies in the lack of customer support similar to the ones offered by proprietary OEM suppliers. This can be remedied however, by joining open source forums focused on applications for GPS navigational devices.
